County Issues Burn Ban Due to Hazardous Fire Conditions

Mar 28, 2026

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Cumberland County has issued a countywide burn ban due to hazardous fire conditions, effective 6 p.m. Saturday, March 28, 2026, and until further notice.

The burn ban follows action by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, which has canceled all burning permits and prohibited all open burning statewide under N.C.G.S. 106-944 and 106-946.

In coordination with the state order, the Cumberland County Fire Marshal has issued a local burn ban in accordance with the County Fire Prevention Ordinance and the North Carolina Fire Code.

All open burning is prohibited, including the use of burn barrels, fire pits and the burning of yard debris.

Under state guidance, the burn ban does not apply to fires within 100 feet of an occupied dwelling, provided they are properly contained and monitored with appropriate fire safety measures. However, the Cumberland County Fire Marshal has the authority to further restrict burning in these areas if conditions warrant.

Residents are encouraged to monitor current fire danger conditions using the North Carolina Fire Danger Rating System, which reflects environmental factors that influence how easily fires can ignite and spread.

The burn ban will remain in effect until conditions improve and officials determine it is safe to resume open burning.
